Jockos - The view from Kam highway Surfable between 4 foot to double, sometimes up to triple overhead. Big, powerfull lefts located across the channel from Chun's, are best on a West or Norhwest swell. A lot of times there is a current that sucks you out and deeper into the pit, so a bigger board is in order out here. Most people getting the better waves are riding at least a 7'2" or bigger. Jocko's breaks best at about 4-6 foot, but on the perfect direction it can handle bigger. You paddle out through the huge channel visible from the highway, but don't sit too deep on a big day!
There are countless stories of severe thrashings and hold-downs from getting caught inside at Jocko's. The deepest lineup seems to be about 4 houses in, you don't want to sit deeper than that normally. If you do break your leash out here, DO NOT swim for the channel, instead let the whitewater wash you in towards the rocks, otherwise you will get caught in the rip. Sometimes a north hook will wash through and close out the channel. All this being said, Jocko's can deliver one of the best barrels and rides on the North Shore on the right day. "If gnarly lefts are what you seek, then look no further than Jocko's; North Shore's unsung hero. This wave will draw on all your surfing skill, experience, and all while pulling you deeper into the pit while sets stack out the back. Beatings here are the norm, the current is relentless, and leashes are constantly put to the test. Bring a bigger board and be ready to use it. Incredible thrills await you. Just drop in!" Chris Cordio Underground Overview: New Smyrna Beach is best on east and south swells with the incoming tide; however, it works on most anything and can actually magnify the size a bit. It may be one foot along the beach, but right next to the inlet it may be three times the size. South swells suck here, so don't bother, and at low tide, it's not as good, as it breaks on the far outside sandbar called Shark Shallows. Oh yeah, there are tons of sharks! Type of wave: Sand Bar - Rights & Lefts Best Tide: high tide Best Size: Anywhere from knee to head high Best Swell Direction: NE, E Best Wind Direction: W Prime Time: Best during fall and winter, but this is one of FL's most consistent breaks Crowd Factor: Hardcore
